5 Tips to Becoming a Better Athlete

getmetahuman

Tip #1 - Eat Healthy

It is important you think of your body like you would think of any other piece of machinery you like to use. Would you put crappy gas in your car? How about something your car doesn't recognize as fuel all together? The human body is far more involved than the most expensive intricate car out there, yet not everyone treats it that way.

If what you are seeking is optimum performance than why would you put anything less than the best fuel in your body. Eat healthy, stay away from the following; processed foods (i.e. anything with a bar code and a box/bag/wrapper), fried foods, foods high in saturated fats and refined sugars.

Tip #2 - Get Bloodwork Done Regularly

Knowing your biochemistry, hormones and lipids is vital to understanding what you are doing right and what you may be doing wrong. People have food sensitivities and don't even know it, there may be deficiencies you don't feel, or have hormonal imbalances that you are unaware of. Know your body, it will take you to the next level. A full panel blood test every quarter testing all your biomarkers will serve you well in the long run.

Tip #3 - Use Mindfulness Techniques

As stated above knowing your body is vital, knowing what controls your body - your mind is paramount. Being in touch and developing the ability to understand your thoughts, emotions and motivations is all part of the framework for developing the mindset that will help you in your athletic endeavors. Try meditation, breathing techniques or anything that fits your style.

Tip #4 - Embrace Failure

Does a baby who is trying to learn to walk give up and throw in the towel... Babies have a smile on their face, fall down more times than you can count, get back up with a bigger smile and keep going. Adopt the same mentality as a baby when it comes to going after what you are trying to achieve. Stay positive, learn from every fall and get back up.

Tip #5 - Train with a Person Marginally Better Than You

Find someone who you can train with that is marginally faster, quicker or stronger than you. It will push you harder than you thought you could go, as you will be just a step or so behind them or they will be a few pounds stronger. When something is within reach you will go into overdrive to get it. If something is far way (e.g. someone who is out of your league) it becomes too far fetched mentally to keep up. Do the same for someone else, when someone is on your tail you will take it up a notch.
